Comment:
"Vanaja" is a beautiful film, informed by humanity and a conviction that no one person is totally bad or totally virtuous. The story is at times humorous, at times dramatic and moving. The eponymous heroine is a revelation -- and she was apparently cast literally from the village, as were almost all the other actors. The actors have so much presence and the performances are so credible that it's hard to believe thay have never acted before, yet we heard it from the director himself at the premiere screening. This is a testimony to his skill and sensitivity. And then there's the dancing -- just beautiful. All round a triumph, and one of the two best movies I saw at TIFF this year. (The other is "Red Road", another kind of story entirely.)
