TorontoFilmFestivalReviews.com: Discovery

Discovery

Discovery showcases contemporary international cinema for new filmmakers.

Among many of the titles include Lee Jun-ik’s King and the Clown, a film based on the play “Yi” (“You”). Inspired by the diaries of a sixteenth century king, the film combines comedy with tragedy. Following the stories of two clowns, one being androgynous, the film uncovers their poverty-stricken lives in spite of their free spirits. Because the clowns evoke laughter in the king, they are admitted into his court where they learn of dangers and the king’s dark side.

Watch King and the Clown on Friday September 8th at 6:00 p.m. in Paramount 3, Saturday September 9th at 12:30 p.m. in Paramount 1 and Thursday September 14th at 6:00 p.m. in Varsity 4.

Another film in the Discovery series is Robert Sarkies’s Out of the Blue, a tragedy involving a gunman, David Gray who shoots and kills thirteen people in the town of Aramoana, a beach community in . Unlike most other violent movies with gunmen, Out of the Blue focuses more on the reactions of those after the murder of the townspeople, from the neighbours to the police, as it weaves the stories of the victims and the survivors.

Catch Out of the Blue on Monday September 11th at 8:30 p.m. in Paramount 4, Wednesday September 13th at 12:45 p.m. in Paramount 4 and Saturday September 16th at 8:00 p.m. in Cumberland 1.
