Canadian Open Vault Canadian Open Vault features a recently restored classic Canadian film. In this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, Peter Pearson’s 1973 film, Paperback Hero centers around the character Rick “Marshal” Dillon as he ponders, “Do you ever get the feeling that everything’s going to rat shit?” The film follows Rick, the star player on the local hockey team in his small Saskatchewan town as he refuses to take great opportunities so he can remain in his little community—a place where he’s respected. Paperback Hero discloses the life in rural Canada and the protagonist’s oblivion to his town’s unstable condition. Rick plays a man who is mislead by American frontier mythology. Shot during the tax shelter period, when spoofs of American genre movies dominated Canadian cinema, Pearson concentrated on presenting an account of a dying Canadian town and how American mythology influenced the nation. Catch Paperback Hero on Friday September 15th at 4:45 p.m. at the Isabel Bader Theatre and Saturday September 16th at 8:45 p.m. at Varsity 2.
